EMT 1986-2005.

The creation of the EMT (1986)

logoemtOn the 17th of January 1986, the Mayor of Valencia, Ricard Pérez Casado, and the manager of SALTUV, José Jara Moreno, signed an agreement to become municipal and therefore Valencia's Council obtained the all of SALTUV's shares, and took on complete control of the company's management. The company changed its name to the "EMPRESA MUNICIPAL DE TRANSPORTES (EMT)" (Municipal Transport Company).

The EMT's first actions where directed at fixing the company's financial situation, modernizing the fleet, and developing publicity campaigns in order to make citizens conscious of the importance of using public transport. With these actions the decline in the amount of passengers was halted and a period of improvement began. The negotiation for the collective agreement was fierce that year as there were many confrontations between strikers and police.

emt_02Ángela Torrecilla Parreño was the first female driver in the EMT. She began in 1985.

With the acquisition of 50 Pegaso model 6038 buses the fleet reached 335 vehicles. That year the Transport Area Offices at the "Calle de Nuestra Señora de Gracia" were inaugurated.

Municipalization (17-01-86).

"Valencia's City Council and SALTUV reached the following agreements:
1. For Valencia's City Council to recover the concession of urban transport and therefore take over the assets and liabilities of SALTUV's patrimonial situation.
2. For Valencia's City Council to give the new company as many goods and rights as were needed for the concession.
3. For the EMT to take up with the Council's commitment to all of SALTUV's active employees. Maintaining all staff in the same conditions agreed upon in the last collective labour agreement with SALTUV.
(Hermenegildo Cerezo Rabadán, Trams, Trolley busses and busses. EMT Valencia).

In September 1987, due to the internal crisis suffered by the PSPV, the EMT's board of directors suffered changes such as Manuel del Hierro García becoming the new president.
Due to the agreement reached with the "Universidad Politécnica de Valencia" , the EMT inaugurated its Vehicle Diagnosis Centre. The company participated in Expojove for the first time and 56 new Pegaso model 6420 busses were acquired causing the fleet to reach 355 vehicles. That summer lines 21 and 22 started running joining line 20 that for had done so two years.

On the 9th of October the "Metro" (Subway) was inaugurated in Valencia. The EMT modified its network (lines 9, 61 and 62) in order to accommodate the new situation. The benefits of these measures would be not reflected until two years later, however the amount of passengers that year reached 90 million.
In 1989, The EMT's Corporative Identity Manual came into effect at that same time, in June, it participated in the UITP congress. 60 new Reanult PR100.2 model busses started circulation and during the month of August the Customer Information and Services Office was created.

The fleet increased the number of units to 391 busses in service, with the incorporation of 31 new Renault PR100.2.
That same year the EMT created lines 10, 14, 15, 29, 36 and 91, the last one of these was created to replace the FGV's line 4, which had just been eliminated. At the same time the publicity campaigns promoting public transport continued using the slogan "CHANGE YOUR CAR, CATCH THE BUS".

emt_07emt_05In 1991, when Rita Barberá reached Valencia's City Council, due to the coalition formed by the "Partido Popular" and "Union Valenciana", Francisco Camps Ortiz was named the president of the EMT. On the 4th of March line 12 started running and four days later, lines 40 and 41 completely modified their route. The EMT participated in a project involving the exchange of experiences with people with reduced mobility, funded by the CEE. The number of passengers reached 105 million, a number which would be beaten in 1992, with totals reaching 111 Million. Another 10 Renault PR100.2 busses joined the fleet.
